This poem was written in 2018 by Phebe Phillips. It is an annual reading on this podcast.
In this episode Phebe Phillips reads her delightful poem, Cat and Mouse’s Christmas. Written by Phebe, this poem illustrates the magical friendship between a cat, and a mouse after the humans have gone to bed.
Cat and Mouse’s Christmas Poem
On the night before Christmas, inside the warm house,
Cat was stirring, in preparation for tea with Mouse.
He mulled Catnip, Camomile, Dutch Lavender, and Peppermint Drops.
He cubed Cheddar, and Swiss. He made Havarti cream pops.
They laughed and told stories, they giggled—Tee-Hee .
Cat and Mouse, great friends they would be.
They looked at the tree,
and hid in the branches.
They played cat and mouse,
and did silly dances.
Cat gifted Mouse scraps of yarn from his ball.
Mouse gifted Cat a felted acorn he found last Fall.
Daylight was breaking, it was time to go home.
They hugged and rubbed whiskers, made hearts with their tails.
Christmas Day was waking, cloudless and bright.
Said Cat to Mouse, “Merry Christmas my friend. I’ll see you tonight.”
The “Meows and Purrs” for this episode were voiced by Olivia. She was the first cat featured on Episode 01.
She was sixteen, and passed away Thanksgiving weekend, 2018. We here at The Literary Catcast felt it was appropriate to use her sweet voice again for the last 2018 episode.
Olivia was also the littermate to Oscar, her sixteen-year-old brother featured in Episode 04. They were fortunate to live all their days together.
I hope you enjoy The Literary Catcast. I would love to hear from you. I never plan to have sponsors—this is a work of love. I have no set schedule to release episodes, because as I mentioned the reading is very time intensive, so please subscribe to stay tuned, and tap the 5-stars if you listen on Apple Podcasts.
Cheers to cats, hot tea, excellent writers, and good story telling. Thanks for listening.
